From the East Coast to the Wild West Coast – An Adventure of Extremes
There are hikes that feel like small escapes from everyday life – pleasant, light, and refreshing. And then there are journeys like this: an adventure that catapults you straight into another world. The hike from Costa Calma to the west coast is no mere stroll; it’s an experience that challenges the senses and reveals new impressions with every step. For photographers like us, it’s a treasure chest full of captivating motifs.
Our journey begins at the unassuming parking lot of the school sports field – a starting point that makes us hesitate for a moment: Is our car really safe here? But thoughts like these can’t hold back our sense of adventure. In the distance, we spot the wind farm of Costa Calma, a modern array of wind turbines spinning hypnotically to the rhythm of the constant coastal breeze. These futuristic giants tower majestically into the sky, creating an exciting contrast to the barren landscape surrounding them. Sand, scattered bushes, and sparse vegetation paint a picture of calm – at least at first.
As we leave the wind farm behind, the landscape reveals its true character. The vastness seems endless, the sand glows golden in the sunlight, and the nearly cloudless sky stretches out like an eternal roof. The ground is dry, dusty, and dotted with tracks – from animals, hikers, and the restless dance of the wind. It feels as though nature has left a massive artwork here. With every step, a sense of freedom grows as the heat beats down on us and everyday life fades into the horizon. Suddenly, we reach a point where we can see the sea on both the east and west sides. How narrow the island feels here – a line between two worlds.
To the west, the terrain changes dramatically. The vegetation disappears, and the barren vastness is interrupted by jagged rocks that rise toward the sky like natural sculptures. Here, nature takes control. The west coast is wild and untamed, with bizarre formations that defy the ocean. The Atlantic lies before us – mighty, untamed, crowned with foaming waves that create an impressive spectacle. Its blue hues, streaked with shimmering whites, contrast against the radiant sky.
A particularly striking rock catches our attention: a stone colossus that resembles a horse. Naturally, we can’t resist the temptation to climb this “rock horse” – a moment of childlike joy in the midst of this rugged wilderness. Our camera is constantly in action. Long exposures capture the waves’ movement, while macro shots reveal the tiny wonders of this landscape. In the natural pools, we discover busy little crabs that seem to scrutinize us with almost mocking glances.
From here, the view extends all the way to Cofete, framed by massive mountains that stand like protective shields. It’s a panorama of breathtaking beauty and serene solitude. No crowds, no noise, except for the constant roar of the ocean. The wind gently brushes against our skin, occasionally broken by a whimsical dust devil spinning sand into the sky.
In this remote setting, we also encounter ravens. With their curious nature, they join us, and soon, a small feeding ritual unfolds. These intelligent birds seem as much at home here as the rugged rocks – a living testament to life thriving even in the harshest environments. We sit quietly, watching as this bizarre lunar landscape becomes a stage for nature before our eyes.
This hike was a mix of challenge and deceleration for us. The heat, the barren vastness, the wild Atlantic – they demand respect but also offer unforgettable moments. It’s a place where you can leave everything behind. And that’s what makes it so special: the freedom, the silence, and the untamed beauty of nature. Who says adventure has to be loud? Sometimes, a hike from the east coast to the west coast is enough to experience a journey that lingers in your memory for a long time.
Tips – For Hiking in Fuerteventura’s Desert
The desert and the west coast are waiting to be explored – but, dear friends, only with the right gear, plenty of water, and a healthy dose of respect for nature. Because, as every seasoned nature enthusiast knows: the Atlantic is stunning but has a very direct way of reminding us who’s in charge here.
There’s nothing better than experiencing the vastness of the desert – but let’s be honest: if you think the desert wind is a gentle caress on your face, you’ll quickly learn otherwise. A hat is not a fashion accessory; it’s a lifesaving necessity, just like proper sun protection.
So, pack your things, but remember: a hiker without preparation will hardly enjoy the adventure to the end – unless they consider a sunburn a worthy souvenir. But don’t worry: with the right footwear, proper equipment, and a smart plan, nature lovers can fully savor the stunning beauty of the west coast.
The desert is patient: it waits.
